Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Therapy for ADD can help adults make practical changes to help take control of their difficulties with paying attention, organizing and making decisions.
Difficulty paying attention, staying organized, making decisions and keeping relationships are all manifestations of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). You find it impossible to concentrate and frequently feel restless, bored or irritable. You can’t seem to finish what you start. You answer questions before they’re asked, impatient for the person speaking to just get to the point. Your desk is a mess, and you may feel your life is as well.
In children, these same behaviors may result in poor performance in school, conflict withteachers or peers, or power struggles with parents. No matter what you do as a parent, you may feel frustrated and discouraged; your child can seem out of control and unmanageable. Relationships in your family may suffer as one child demands more and more of your attention.
Untreated, ADD (or ADHD, with hyperactivity), can wreak havoc in your personal andprofessional life. It can affect your health, when you can’t keep appointments; your financial well-being, when you can’t manage to balance your checkbook; and your self-esteem, when you come to believe that you are bad–or stupid–because you don’t seem to function as well as other people.
Therapy (often in addition to medication) can help you understand your unique strengthsand weaknesses; it can give you tools and strategies that will help you organize your life ina way that feels much more manageable and fulfilling.
