Perhaps you had questions about your sexual orientation or gender identity early in life. You may have felt isolated because you felt different than those around you and had no language to talk about it, or maybe talking itself felt dangerous.
Coming to terms with who you are and celebrating that openly is joyous, but it also may mean encountering the judgments, opinions, and rejection of others. Once you come out, new issues may arise: the reactions of family and friends, finding a partner, how people at your workplace view you, the question of marriage and children, and/or the painful experience of not being treated as an equal.
Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer (LGBTQ) individuals have unique challenges to grapple with, in addition to the everyday struggles of life. Trying to navigate these challenges can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, depression, and for some people, suicidal thoughts. Adolescents who are coming to terms with their sexuality and/or gender identity often have additional stresses. If you are struggling with issues surrounding your sexual orientation and/or gender identity, or you suspect your teen is, therapy can help.
Therapy provides a protected space where you can explore and develop your sense of self within a safe and caring environment. Therapy can help you through the transitions as you emerge into the fullness of who you are.
Therapy is a place to feel understood and be accepted for who you are. Therapy can help you work out the many transitions you will go through as you emerge into your fullness and take your place proudly in your chosen communities.
